A hydrogel can be made synthetically or extracted from organic matter. When made from organic matter they can be edible and easily biodegradable. They can easily be recycled and reused by reversing the hydrogel process.

Their diversity of use spans food packaging, drug delivery, biomedical devices, biosensors, water treatment, cosmetics and now bio-plastic wraps.
